Ubuntu 8.04/OS Reinstallation
From DellLinuxWiki
On factory-installed systems, Ubuntu 8.04 can be re-installed via 2 different methods:
- From hard drive (recommended): By using the GRUB menu at boot time.
- By using the DVD ISO created after the system is received.
CAUTION: BACKUP ALL PERSONAL DATA BEFORE YOU PERFORM THESE OPERATIONS, AS ALL PERSONAL DATA ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE PERMANENTLY ERASED.
[edit] Reinstalling from hard drive
This OS re-install option can be used to restore the system to its original factory settings:
1. Reboot your system. Shortly after you see the Dell logo, please ESC to invoke the GRUB menu.
2. Select "Reinstall Operating System".
3. Select "Recovery Mode -- Automatically reinstall and erase hard drive".
You will see the following on the screen:

The user is expected to type exactly the string above (i.e. ERASE).
When the OS installation begins, the user will see the following:

When finished, the system runs the OEM Configuration Wizard to allow the user to select system language & location, time zone, keyboard layout and first user.
[edit] Reinstalling from DVD disc
A custom Ubuntu 8.04 re-install DVD can be created using the utility preinstalled on your system.
This re-installation method should only be used if for some reason you can't re-install from your hard drive. This option will rebuild the hard drive as it came from the factory. All value addons such as Codecs & DVD playback will be included.
Instructions:
1. Double click the icon to create a recovery disk.
2. This will start a wizard for producing the disk.

3. This process will take 10-20 minutes.

4. Reboot the system and press F12 when you see the Dell logo as the system boots. Select to boot from the CD/DVD drive.
5. You will get a boot menu similar to an Ubuntu disk. Select the appropriate recovery option:

6. You will see the following on the screen:

The user is expected to type exactly the string above (i.e. ERASE).
5. The boot process will continue. The installer will then reconstruct itself on the hard drive before beginning. You will see the follow screen with a pulsating progress bar for approximately 10-20 minutes before it begins:
